OK folks, it is time to be honest about what happens to the stuff in our recycling bins. And we must adopt a new attitude that is most helpful to solve the growing problem of trash.
Let me give you the punchline first: Our habit of using single-use disposables are creating an overwhelming global problem. We cannot recycle our way out of it. We absolutely must adopt a new habit of Refusing, Reducing and Reusing.
If you live in the US, you may think we have the plastic problem handled. You put your plastic in the recycle bin and it magically becomes transformed into remarkable, useful new items. Sorry to burst your happy bubble, but it is not. There is not a large market for used plastic and it is very hard to recycle. Data from the World Economic Forum states that -
32% of plastic packaging ends up littering the environment
40% is sitting in landfills
14% is incinerated
14% is recycled, but only 2% is effectively recycled. Most of the 14% is downcycled in that it becomes something worse.
Here is what really happens to it...
Before 2018, US and European plastic recycling was loaded on container ships and sent to China. But in 2018, China's National Sword Policy banned scrap plastic imports. They had warehouses filled with bales of plastic waste and no use for it. So they loaded it up and sent it to Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia where it was dumped anywhere to include rivers, ocean shores and the backyards of the poor. If you can stand to watch this nightmare of a horror film, visit The Story of Plastic and request to view it. I hope you can see a trailer at https://youtu.be/37PDwW0c1so
This is why the TakeMeOuts were created as a tee-tiny baby step toward reusing rather than recycling containers from restaurant leftovers. Right now, restaurants are starting to reopen after the initial effects of the pandemic.
This is a great time to commit to making a small change.
Get as many TakeMeOuts as you need for yourself and others. Grab some gift cards to put in the pouches as gifts for any occasion. Then tell everyone to keep them in every car so they will be handy if dining out.
Here are some links to get gift cards online:
